GladAfrica Championship Story

The GladAfrica Championship. This is the story of the power of a place, a people and a persistent pursuit of perfection.

A little under 20 years ago an idea was born. An idea which, at that time was unprecedented and seemingly impossible. What if a world class consulting engineering firm could be built by a native son of the soil?  Surely farfetched, it appeared to some. A flight of fancy, others would go on to say. A pie-in-the-sky daydream that would never land. But you see, there is nothing as powerful as an idea whose time has come… and one of the sweetest joys of bringing such an idea to life, is doing it in spite of the doubters.

What started as the dream of one visionary, through collective dedication and devoted teamwork soon became the GladAfrica Group: a conglomerate incorporating GladAfrica Management Services, GladAfrica Consulting Engineers, GladAfrica Project Managers and GA Environment.

GladAfrica Championship Story

And today, that idea, that dream, that conjecture, is the sponsoring partner of the eponymous GladAfrica Championship.

GladAfrica Championship believes in developing communities, audiences and to bring hope to the nation through the sport we all love, soccer.

Our sponsorship gives opportunities for young talented soccer players to be nurtured properly and put in the right structures to make sure that their talent opens doors for them. We hope to see an improvement in community football. Hopefully, through this celebration of the best, we usher in South Africa’s next crop of national champions.

This means dedication, commitment, perseverance, consistency. It means understanding that one goal is all it takes to reach your goal.

In the GladAfrica Championship being the best means more than winning the R3 million prize money. It also means joining the games best, the Premier Soccer League. Ultimately being the best means taking home the prestigious GladAfrica Championship Trophy…

Forged by 10 artisans, over 150 hours, using a combination of traditional skill and leading design technology, the majestic GladAfrica Championship Trophy is the crowning glory of the league’s pursuit of excellence. Its design speaks to GladAfrica’s commitment to Africa, the place, Africa, the people, and Africa, the pursuit. The trophy showcases how GladAfrica is rooted in investing in communities, we have invested in the sponsorship because we believe in South Africa’s talent.

The Place – Calabash

The calabash, an original African bowl sits atop the trophy as a tribute to Africa the place, with its contrasting vistas of lofty peaks and spreading savannah, its diverse cultural tapestry, its love and generosity. After all a calabash is a dish everyone eats from.

The People – Riser

The riser of the trophy is in the form of collective arms enveloping a globe and stretching upward to hold the calabash. It represents Africa the people. These arms uphold the community the way a caring mother nurtures the growth of her child. This is how GladAfrica intends to develop the community

The Pursuit of Perfection – Plinth/Base

The base of the trophy is sturdy, providing a solid foundation for the entire trophy. It aptly represents the GladAfrica team’s support of the sponsorship; its members’ active participation through match attendance, moral support and cheerleading.  The GladAfrica group’s strength provides the backbone of the entire Championship enterprise.

The Platinum and Gold Plaque

Rounding up the trophy, both literally and figuratively is the plaque. South Africa is a mineral rich country. This wealth must translate into value directly benefitting the community. GladAfrica is investing in the growth of the people of South Africa .

GladAfrica Enters its 7th year as sponsors of the Nedbank Golf Challenge

This year marks seven years since GladAfrica Group began its partnership with the Africa’s major golfing event, the Nedbank Golf Challenge (NGC).

The 2019 instalment of the NGC will take place on 14-17 November 2019 in Sun City, North West province.

The Nedbank Golf Challenge is one of the major highlights on the South African sporting calendar. The tournament will see 64 players, playing over four days for the lucrative overall prize fund of $7.5 million. It is part of the Rolex Series on the European Tour and is the penultimate event on the race to Dubai.

A significant milestone of this year’s Challenge is the 40 years’ anniversary of the Gary Player Country Club, which boasts the best course praised by world golfing champions for its iconic and competitive terrain. GladAfrica is proud to be associated with this proudly South African sports legacy named after one of our best golfing champion, Mr. Gary Player.

This year’s tournament is expected to attract more big names in the golfing world due to the increase in the first prize money and Race to Dubai points. The winner of the 2019 Nedbank Golf Challenge will take home $2.5 million, a substantial increase on last year’s $1.2 million won by Westwood. This year’s tournament also offers an increased haul of Race to Dubai points from 7500 to 10 000, placing the event above what the World Golf Championships tournaments offer.

Among some of the top names in world golf confirmed for this year’s event is Englishman and defending champion Lee Westwood and former Nedbank Golf Challenge champion Henrik Stenson of Sweden – who lifted the trophy at Gary Player Country Club in 2008. He became the first male Major champion from Scandinavia when he triumphed in the 145th Open Championship at Royal Troon three years ago. Also confirmed are English Ryder cup star Tommy Fleetwood, South African Major winner Louis Oosthuizen and Zander Lombard.

In 2012 GladAfrica Group took a strategic decision of entering into a partnership with the organisers of the prestigious sporting event.

GladAfrica Group CEO Mr. Kulani Lebese says in its seventh year, the GladAfrica/Nedbank Golf Challenge partnership has proven to be a phenomenal success. “The four days we spend in Sun City interacting with people from different walks of life have yielded great outcomes for our business. We get to expose our brand to top decision makers, extending beyond the borders of our country. GladAfrica and City of Tshwane agree to mutually terminate contract

Dear Valued Stakeholder

Kindly receive our latest update regarding the relationship between GladAfrica Project Managers and the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality.

Following negotiations between GladAfrica Group (Pty) Ltd and officials of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality regarding the contract between GladAfrica Project Managers and the Municipality, we confirm that the two parties agreed on a separation by mutual consent.

We maintain our initial stance on the matter – that GladAfrica Project Managers was appointed after a rigorous selection process that looked at among other things, our capacity to deliver on the project.

We have met and satisfied all the requirements as stipulated in the Municipality’s Supply Chain regulations and the Municipal Finance Management Act.

It was against this background that we approached the Gauteng Ethics Advisory Council to probe our conduct with regard to the bidding process for the contract. We await the outcome of this process.

We also welcomed the Tshwane Council-initiated probe into this matter and the process subsequently undertaken by the office of the Auditor-General to ascertain whether all the legal prescripts were followed in concluding the contract. We have noted the findings emanating from this process.

The Board of Directors of the GladAfrica Group considered the matter at its meeting in August 2018. The Board took a position that should any aspect of the bidding process be found to be non-compliant with the Municipality’s Supply Chain regulations and the Municipal Finance Management Act, GladAfrica Project Managers should seek to have the relationship reviewed.

We pride ourselves with our delivery on the tasks assigned to us over the past 15 months that we have been contracted to the municipality. Our dynamic teams have helped the municipality turnaround the delivery of services to the people of Tshwane and reverse backlogs.

We have worked closely with the municipality to support officials in their quest to meet the administration’s electoral mandate.

We further acknowledge the decision by the municipality to entrust us with the responsibility of concluding outstanding projects until end of June 2019. Our teams stand ready to execute the assigned tasks as they’ve impeccably done since our appointment in 2017.

Our relationship with the City of Tshwane Municipality dates back more than a decade ago when we were awarded our first opportunity.

We wish to thank the municipality’s administration for finding us capable and suitable to do the work that had been assigned to us. We value the relationship and are grateful for every opportunity we get to work in the municipality.
