From a student beneficiary to colleague

Portia Sibanyoni was awarded a bursary by the GladAfrica Foundation in 2016 to pursue her passion

in electrical engineering. She has a BSc (Eng.) degree in Electrical Engineering from the University

of Witwatersrand. Portia, who is currently employed as an intern electrical engineer at the company,

is also registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a candidate engineer.

We sat down with Portia recently to find out about her journey with GladAfrica.

Describe your journey at GladAfrica and how the company has assisted you in realising your vision?

GladAfrica Group has made my vision of becoming an electrical engineer a reality when they granted

me a bursary after I completed Grade 12 in 2016. It especially helped that I was afforded an opportunity

to work at GladAfrica Group and PLP Africa Group during my school holidays. I managed to gain

real-life experience and get clarity on the world of electrical engineering. GladAfrica Group has not

only financed my studies but also provided me with support through mentorships to help me succeed

in my career so far. With the support that I received from the company, my school and family, I have

pulled through all the difficulties of my academic journey and I obtained my degree in four years.

What projects have you been involved in since you started working for the company as an intern?

I started working at GladAfrica in January 2020 as an electrical engineering intern. I was

appointed to work full-time on a hospital assessments project. I conducted site investigations

and exam design drawings, amongst other things. I assessed the condition of electrical equipment and

installations at the various hospitals, and compiled conditional assessment reports for compliance

standards.

I was site-based and travelled throughout South Africa, which was a great experience. However, the

project was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and ground to a halt for a few months. I used the

time during lockdown to familiarise myself with the early stages of the design work in the project.

Thankfully, we resumed our assessment work for hospitals a few months ago, although under strict

Covid-19 regulations.

What are your observations of GladAfrica Group?

I plan to be registered as a Professional Engineer with ECSA in the next three to five years.

GladAfrica Group is one of the fastest growing black-owned consultancy firms in South Africa, delivering

services in the built environment and I am proud to be part of the team. It also offers opportunities

for goal-driven learners from disadvantaged backgrounds to access the bursary programme, of

which I was a beneficiary. This programme greatly shapes the future of many learners – and South

Africa at large. The growth of the company means the creation of job opportunities and the provision

of excellent quality services to clients. It is a brand that I believe in and one for which I am proud to

be of service.

Congratulations to the GladAfrica Championship Winners for the 2020/21 Season – Sekhukhune United

Sekhukhune United finally got their hands on the GladAfrica Championship trophy on Wednesday evening.

The Premier Soccer League handed Sekhukhune their medals and a R3million cheque live on SuperSport on Wednesday evening, with only a few of the players in attendance.

The PSL also awarded former Free State Stats attacker Monnapule Saleng his Top Goal Scorer award for the 2020/2021 campaign.

Saleng has since secured a move to Orlando Pirates, who then loaned him out to Swallows FC for the current season.

The referee awards were also given out on the night, with Thando Ndzandzeka walking away with the Referee of the Season while the late Shaun Olive was the recipient of the Assistant Referee Oof the Season accolade.

GladAfrica foundation invests in an epilepsy research project

IN A MUTUAL PARTNERSHIP WITH THE GLADAFRICA FOUNDATION TRUST, UNIVERSITY OF VENDA HAS INITIATED AN EPILEPSY RESEARCH PROJECT WHICH AIMS TO DEVELOP AN EPILEPSY INTERVENTION PROGRAMMES FOR THE RURAL COMMUNITIES OF LIMPOPO AND MPUMALANGA PROVINCES IN ORDER TO PROMOTE QUALITY OF LIFE AMONG PEOPLE LIVING WITH EPILEPSY, THEIR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS.

Progress

On 12 February 2019, GladAfrica Epilepsy Research Project was launched to hit the ground running. At that time, we had already recruited six students, two PhDs and four Masters students. Not long after the launch, students started with their proposal work and training.

In 2019 alone, students underwent three training including practical field training, because more than achieving the main purpose of the project, it is our aim to equip and empower students in the epilepsy field of research.

The National lockdown brought about a challenge in progress, however, once allowed to travel, the project team managed to achieve the following:

  • Attainment of Clearance.
  • Promotion and development of students’ proposals.
  • Development and testing of data collection tools.
  • Facilitated rural communities’ entry and permissions to conduct the study in Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces (Limpopo communities: Bochum, Nweli, Malavuwe, Mtititi; Mpumalanga communities: Clara, Jerusalem and Acornhoek)
  • We also contracted community health workers (67 CHW) in the above-mentioned communities as data collectors.
  • Train community health care workers to collect data.
  • Collect quantitative data from these communities already and busy capturing and cleaning data for better analysis.

What’s next?

The project team will be capturing and cleaning the collected data and analyse it. We will also be striving to train community health care workers for data collection in Kwaggasfontein (Mpumalanga province) and Modjadjiskolf (Limpopo province), while in the same breath, we will continue to collect qualitative data (interviews and focus group discussions) in all rural communities.

After which, analysis will be made and programmes will be developed, validated and applied in various communities. What’s more, after the completion of the project, we are aiming to start up epilepsy centres in different communities which will serve as an educational and epilepsy assistance centres.

It is with great pleasure to also commend the selected communities for their warm welcome and cooperation in all aspects of this project.

Congratulations to the GladAfrica Championship winners for the 2019/20 season

31 AUGUST 2020

The GladAfrica Group congratulates Swallows FC, the 2019/20 champions of the inaugural GladAfrica Championship.

Just over a year ago, the GladAfrica Group entered into a five-year partnership agreement with the Premier Soccer League to be the title sponsor of the second-tier professional football league in South Africa.

It gives us immense pleasure to be part of the crowning of the first ever champions of this exciting league.

The fact that the crowning of the champions had to go down to the wire bears testimony to the competitive nature of the league in the past season.

“Both the top two finishers had to sweat it out until the final whistle, making for a thrilling close of the season and a display of an exciting brand of football,” says GladAfrica Group Chairman Mr Noel Mashaba.

The response by the football loving supporters is further confirmation of the strong brand that the GladAfrica Championship is becoming.

This is an epic achievement by the winning club and their victory should be celebrated as a progressive step towards creating an exciting league.

“Over the past year, we’ve witnessed teams battling it out for the top spot. It has been an exciting experience for us to watch the commitment and dedication displayed by teams vying to finish at the top of the table,” says Mr. Mashaba.

We congratulate all the teams that participated in the league and wish them well for the future. We are looking forward to seeing them compete for top honours again next season. We send our commiserations to the clubs that were unfortunate not to survive relegation. We encourage them to regroup and recommit themselves to working hard in order to fight their way back to the GladAfrica Championship.

While the season didn’t go as we had anticipated due to the Covid-19 pandemic breakout, we believe the teams have shown keen interest in building a competitive league characterized by an exciting brand of football.

The Head of Department

We have built a solid foundation upon which only big and better things will follow. Once again, congratulations and good luck.
